But back to the bathroom; we're not overhauling any major tile or fixture work, all cosmetic. But I'm really excited. The bathroom and laundry room are the only spaces we still haven't really touched since moving in back in Fall 2010.
Here's our before pictures:
I love that brown tree shower curtain and can't bring myself to sell it even though I replaced it with a new one. I'm keeping it in the hopes that our next house will have two bathrooms (because really we need two) and I can use it there as well.
The plan:
new shower curtain
new rug
spackle
clean
paint
repair medicine cabinet hinges
make and hang art
So far we've given it a good scrub. There was this awful sticker on the side of the tub since we moved into the house (you can sort of see it in that first photo above too) but I finally decided to do something about it.
I asked my Facebook friends for their best non-toxic solutions and vinegar and elbow grease seemed to do the trick. I soaked a rag in vinegar and let it lay on the spot for about 15 minutes, then Steve carefully scraped it off with a blade. Good as new! He also gave the tub an amazing scrub down with borax and I can't remember the last time it looked so clean.
Next, some minor spackling needed to be done on a place where some paint had chipped off. Steve and Darwin took care of that in no time!
And otherwise I've just been cleaning as I go along. I generally keep up with it pretty well since it's the "diaper spay" zone and that grosses me out that poop spray particles could be living on the surfaces in there, ick. Leah wrote a great post about totally spring cleaning your bathroom though and I've taken a few of her ideas/reminders to our bathroom as well. And you can see lots more non-toxic cleaning strategies I've gathered on my pin-board right here.
On to the fun part! I made this piece of art to hang in there out of old paint chips we already had from other projects. This one came right out of the Young House Love book. I chose colors based on the new wall color and shower curtain colors.
I like it. It reminds me of a tile mosaic.
I have this vision that pictures of Darwin splashing the tub will look super adorable framed in the bathroom too. As soon as my DSLR lens is back from the repair shop that's going to be my next little photo project.
So back to the list:
spackle Still need to touch up
paint Purchased and on the schedule for about a week from now
repair medicine cabinet hinges
make and hang art
Hopefully the next update will be the finished bathroom! What house projects are you working on lately?

That looks great! Last summer I decided I was tired of just about everything in our house--paint colors, decor, etc. So, I donated a bunch of things and am slowly patching things together. Our goal this winter is to get new flooring in our kitchen, hallway, and Liam's toddler room. This spring, I'd like to make a few changes to our bathroom and repaint our "loft."
ReplyDeleteIt's looking great so far Margaux! Love the framed art that you made and I think the pictures of Darwin in the tub would look so cute hanging up on the wall! Also I love that shower curtain, hopefully you'll be able to use it in your next home!
