Sensory Play: Science in the Kitchen

Last week I was looking for some new activities to try with D to keep him occupied and stimulated.  I thought about something that I liked to do as a kid, MAKE SLIME!  This is a great activity to try with toddlers and kids because you probably already have all the ingredients in your cabinet and the mess is pretty easy to clean up because all of the ingredients are natural.  Just wipe it away with some water.

For the slime I used cornstarch and water.  That's it.  Super simple.  Play around with the proportions to get different textures of slime.  Older kids might even want to try adding food coloring, just be careful of stains.

While we were already digging through the kitchen cabinets I figured I'd pull out the good old vinegar and baking soda for some cool foaming action too.

That kept him occupied for at least half an hour.  Do you keep any tricks up your sleeve to pull out and impress the kiddos every once in a while?

  1. That's such a fun age when the simple things hold so much intrigue. I used the "Out of Sync Child Has Fun" book that is packed full of ideas for hands-on sensory activities for kids. Although it is geared for kids who have sensory issues, they are so fun that I would think any kid would enjoy them.

  8. My son has watched me making up my cleaning solutions with vinegar and baking soda with the same delight. This gave me the idea to let him get involved with the process next time!

  11. We love to do science. I actually have a tab that will take you to some of the experiments we've tried at my blog, if you are interested: (http://mommyrepeat.blogspot.com). We did slime one time, but my oldest would not even touch the stuff. Oh well, I had a great time playing with it!
